An agora in ancient Greece was essentially the city center. It was a meeting area for the public, where philosophers speak, politicians proclaim democracy, and public performances. The agora was also a place where people could hang out and a marketplace. Just below the north side of the Acropolis, you will find the Ancient Agora of Athens.
The Ancient Agora of Athens was also considered a sacred place and was religion-focused. The Temple of Hephaestus still stands to this day in the agora. Previously, temples of Athena, Zeus, Ares, and Apollo stood in the agora. The Church of the Holy Apostles is located in the agora and dates back to approximately the 10th century AD.
